Children falling in love with Christ

The Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD)

In the Confraternity (revision) of the New Testament written in 1941(Matthew 28:18-20) we read:   Jesus drew near and spoke to them saying, "All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you all days, even unto the consummation of the world."

These are the last words of St. Matthew's Gospel where Christ sends forth His Apostles to conquer the world and make all men His disciples.  In the year 1562, after the Council of Trent, the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, or CCD as we refer to the Confraternity, was founded to ensure that all peoples were being fully taught the Faith. In 1934 the CCD was revitalized in the United States specifically aimed at children. Today when we think of CCD we think of children's religious education.

At the CCD in the Church of Our Saviour, we continue to bring the message of Christ to His people as He instructed His apostles to do so very long ago.  We seek to bring to the children the lessons Christ gave his followers as written in the Bible and through the Tradition and Magisterium of the Holy Roman Catholic Church Christ founded.

History of current CCD in the Church of Our Saviour

The present program began in 1982 with five candidates for First Holy Communion. For the first ten years of the program, we began children in the second grade when they are seven years old which is considered the age of reason and the year First Holy Communion and First Penance are administered.

Seeing a growing number of younger children at Sunday Mass, the program was opened to children as young as four in 1992.  It was at this time the program really began to grow.

On the Feast of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, Sunday, June 6, 2010, we anticipate having 14 children receive their First Holy Communion and 15 children receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.
